Apicoectomy (Surgical root canal)
Peoria & Galesburg IL

Why would I need Endodontic Surgery?

When root canal treatment is performed optimally, its success rate exceeds 90%. Infrequently, a lesion in the bone (e.g. chronic abscess, cyst, etc) may not allow for complete bony healing. Our office may recommend performing a root canal surgery (an apicoectomy) to encourage healing. Endodontic surgery can be used to locate fractures or hidden canals that do not appear on x-rays but still manifest pain in the tooth. Damaged root surfaces or the surrounding bone may also be treated with this procedure. An apicoectomy (root canal surgery) is the most common surgical procedure performed in order to save your tooth.

WHAT IS AN APICOECTOMY?

The video above illustrates this simple procedure. Our office uses the most advanced techniques requiring very small incisions, and the procedure is performed under the microscope for unparalleled success. The patient is completely numb; most patients remark it was easier than the original root canal! A small window is created in the bone, and the diseased tissue is accessed and removed. A small portion of the root may be trimmed, and a special surgical grade filling is placed at the end of the root. A few sutures are placed and removed in as few as 3 days later! The bone naturally heals around the root over a period of months restoring full function.

Following the procedure, there may be some minimal discomfort (most patients only need to take an over the counter (OTC) medicine for one or 2 times!) Slight swelling is noticed on days 2 & 3 while the incision heals. This is normal for any surgical procedure. If you have any concerns, we ask you to call our office.
