Research

  • Evaluation of ultrasonography for the in vivo detection of periradicular lesions in the human maxilla and mandible, May 2004 – June 2005. Research coordinated with National Aeronautical and Space Administration – Johnson Space Center (NASA-JSC) for potential deployment aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
  • Contemporary Endodontic Therapy and Allergens: Have We Opened Pandora’s Box?, An extensive review of the medical and dental literature was conducted which revealed many of the materials utilized in contemporary endodontic therapy are potential allergens. The purpose of this study was to raise awareness of these seemingly innocuous allergens found in everyday endodontic materials, provide a practical method to ascertain related previous allergic reactions from patients, recognition of the responses they evoke, and appreciate the implications of these materials on current endodontic practice. May 2004. American Association of Endodontists Annual Session Table Clinic Presentation.
  • Protease Activity of Enterococcus faecalis Colonizing Medicated Root Canals, Numerous studies have shown that persistent endodontic infections are often caused by the resistant microorganism Enterococcus faecalis. There is little research that describes the mechanisms through which bacteria metabolize and proliferate in the nutrient poor environment of a medicated root canal. This research examined the role that E. faecalis proteolytic enzymes, including collagenases and gelatinases, play in maintaining persistent infections. Awarded the Southern Illinois University’s Dean’s Student Research Fellowship, May 2001.
